Daniel Eley
Enjoying the Olympics, Godalming Surrey

Olympic torch in Godalming, 20th July 2012
After reading the Telegraph article today (LINK) about us British folk not being ‘massively enthusiastic about the Olympics’, we decided here at essence magazine to go and see what all the fuss was about in Godalming tonight, when the torch passed through.
It certainly was very popular in the High Street, with the crowds starting to gather from around 3:30pm. Everywhere you looked there were young and old people enjoying the atmosphere waiting for the flame to pass through.

First came all the sponsors, many comments have been made about these being a media circus that preceded the flame, but we felt it got the crowd going and the atmosphere was brilliant.

Then came the big moment were the torch itself passed, the crowd really got behind Daniel Eley. From Daniel Eley’s nomination story: Daniel had been working with street children in South American for 3 years when he broke his neck diving into a river. Dan's insurance did not cover his repatriation and he was kept in a Columbian hospital until an internet campaign raised sufficient funds to bring him home.

The whole afternoon was a once in a lifetime experience and after listening to people comments all around us we think us “British folk’ are more than ready for the Olympics to start!
